Abstract
We report on the development of a high power focussing B-applied extractor type ion diode for the 1.5 TW pulse generator KALIF. Using a Ti-Pd metal hydride film on the anode surface and diverting part of the generator current through the anode film with the help of plasma opening switches a hydrogen plasma is preformed on the anode before any voltage is applied to the diode gap. Ion efficiencies of up to 95% are achieved if a strong insulating magnetic field is applied. Thereby it is possible to generate up to 0.7 TW ion power in the diode of which approximately 90% is in protons.
