Abstract
In this paper, two methods are proposed and analyzed for detailed modeling of power electronic devices and converters in real time using an FPGA. First, a Thevenin equivalent switch representation is enhanced to model the on characteristics of switching devices. Using this approach, an algorithm for real time electro-thermal modeling of power converters is proposed and an example is illustrated. The accuracy of this model is validated with experimental results performed using a 4.5 kW boost converter. This method is an efficient way to perform real time electro-thermal simulations of power electronic circuits operating at high switching frequencies.
