Abstract
At present, English has become the common language for international research publication. Therefore, researchers who want to publish their work need to write their research papers in English. Research writing should not contain any mistake, otherwise it would make the authors look unprofessional. For non-native researchers, there are several English academic writing problems such as inappropriate vocabulary selection, spelling error, wrong grammar, and poor organization. As a solution, we propose an approach to the framework of academic writing support system. The system is aimed to help non-native researchers write their research papers. In this paper, we focus on verb suggestion task. We propose and compare various data patterns for verb suggestion. The proposed data patterns include exact pattern, expanded pattern, and exact and expanded pattern by using Part-of-Speech (POS) and wildcard query. From the experimental results, using both noun and pronoun expanded pattern yielded the highest Mean Reciprocal Rank (MRR) equal to 0.493.
