Abstract
An anisotropic representation for periodic arrays is formulated that rigorously takes into account spatial as well as temporal dispersion and reduces at lower spatial and temporal frequencies to a continuum description in terms of permittivity and permeability. The formulation inherently produces a causal macroscopic permittivity and inverse permeability for generalized electric and magnetic or diamagnetic macroscopic polarization.
