Abstract
This paper discusses the challenges in Earth Observation (EO) satellite operations based on the experience of involvement in more than 50 satellite missions in over 30 years. The operational challenges are discussed with analogies between the operator - mission control system - satellite relationship and pilot - cockpit - aircraft relationship which is more commonly known. Finally the paper derives the requirements for satellite operator training systems including long-term issues such as reusability, operation cost, customization, and educational uses.
