Abstract
Using characteristic mode theory (CMT), we show that there are limited number of low Q modes supported by an electrically small structure. The minimum Q of each mode of any substructure is observed to be successively bounded by that of the primary structure, implying fundamental limit on multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) antenna bandwidth and providing a metric for antenna shape synthesis.
