Abstract
The optimization design of a surface-mounted permanent magnet motor is presented in this study by computing the air-gap magnetic field distribution and cogging torque. Calculation of the magnetic field distribution is performed using Laplace or Poisson equations. To compute the electromagnetic torque, the virtual displacement and Maxwell stress methods are employed. Finite element analysis is also performed to validate the results.
