Abstract
Jugs of water, cans of food, a radio with fresh batteries?although everyone knows that they should have an emergency kit stored nearby just in case, few people in the United States do so. Most people do not even like to think about the possibility of ever needing emergency supplies. Fortunately, a collection of engineers, medical professionals, and other researchers have a different mindset and are hard at work to keep citizens as safe as possible before, during, and after natural disasters, epidemics, and other health emergencies.
