Abstract
Based on a countrywide energy audit of 300 residential buildings in Uganda (conducted by UN-Habitat and Uganda Martyrs University), we analyzed holistically the residential energy consumption patterns and the overall housing energy requirements of urban and rural households in Uganda. In this study, we add perspective to the ongoing discussion on the energy use and sustainability of urban vs. rural living and that of different housing types. The scope of this study covers identifying correlations between energy use and the physical and thermal properties of these buildings. Based on the outcomes of this study, the major Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) will be systematically studied in future research to assess the energy saving potential to improve energy efficiency for Uganda´s residential building stock.
