  • Abstract
Distributed Generation (DG) source in a power system is used in direct and indirect modes. Direct mode includes the application of DG during source outage, for voltage profile improvement, etc. In the indirect mode, DG is used in conjunction with a static compensator like Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC), Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) for improvement of power quality. The purpose of the DG in the indirect mode is, it supplies real power required by the static compensator: either for the compensator itself (for internal losses) or to supply to the grid /load connected to the compensator. This paper deals with indirect mode of DG. And the static compensator used is UPQC. The overall system is named as Distributed Generation based Unified Power Quality Conditioner (DGUPQC) and is proposed for compensation of voltage sag and reactive power at the supply/source and load side respectively. The above said operations have been implemented on a (novel) mathematical model of the DGUPQC; which is a Multi-Input-Multi-Output (MIMO) system. The control of DGUPQC, comprises of speed, DC link voltage, and injected voltage/reactive power control, and is performed by conventional Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers. Simulation studies have been carried in Matlab/Simulink and the results shows excellent performance of the DGUPQC.
