Abstract
A course is described that is offered to undergraduate students in power engineering at Tel Aviv University. It deals with behavior of mathematical models used in power system analysis. Students are encouraged to write their own computer programs and to apply these programs to design of their own power system. The course reviews characteristics of network elements and then introduces and applies a load-flow algorithm based on a dc model. Solutions of quadratic equations are used to study multiple solutions and convergence properties of a nodal-iteration algorithm. A Newton-Raphson algorithm is used together with load-dispatch equations to form a complete or "optimal" analysis.
