Abstract
A theoretical expression describing the signal to noise ratio (SNR) improvement in a gain-levered laser is presented. The gain-lever effect yields an SNR improvement that is independent of the section length of the laser. However, the rate of spontaneous emission in the laser cavity induces a reduction in this improvement which is found to be dependent on the relative length or its sections
