Abstract
A new type of Ti:LiNbO3 optical modulator employing a ridged structure in conjunction with a shielding plane is proposed. The structure is analysed using the second-order triangular-element quasi-TEM finite element method. The modulator bandwidth is greatly improved to more than 150 GHz while the driving voltage is maintained at 5 V in the 1.5 mu m wavelength region.
