Abstract
Carbon dioxide emissions from the UK transport sector are a growing problem. More fundamental changes are required to address the long-term environmental and social impacts of this problem. This paper presents a variety of ways in which electrical systems, particularly at the lower voltage distribution level, may be called upon to support more sustainable transport. It will no longer be reasonable to consider the electricity and transport sectors as separate. The three paths to lower-carbon transportation described reinforce the importance of intelligently designed and secure electricity system from a mix of low-carbon sources
