Abstract
Advanced applications of a relational database manager, dBASE III PLUS, to core power system problems developed in the context of the power engineering curriculum at the University of Calgary in Canada are presented. A description is given of independent application programs, using the built-in dBASE III PLUS programming language, for the formulation of bus admittance and bus impedance matrices for power networks from the database describing network topology. Two databases, NETWORK and STATIONS, are set up to store the topology of the network. A common file program, ORGANIZE, is developed to preprocess the data contained in NETWORK and STATIONS and store it in an intermediate database TOPOL. The command file programs Y-BUS and Z-BUS access the TOPOL database, formulate the Y-BUS and Z-BUS matrices, and store them in their respective databases for appropriate downstream use. The example problems included demonstrate the ease with which the topology of a power network can be manipulated in a relational DBMS (database management system) environment through independent application programs
