Abstract
The authors show that, when a fibre core cross-section is distorted from circular, the fundamental mode propagation constant β always decreases. To complement the upper bound on β thus obtained, a second approximation is given to β resulting in a simple lower bound and which only requires computation of a geometric shape factor and results for circular cross-sections. The results hold for arbitrary shape and grading
