Interacting with emerging technologies [CD-ROM Supplement Guest Editor´s Introduction]

The Siggraph 2003 Emerging Technologies exhibit (see http://www.siggraph.org/s2003/conference/etech/ ) provided a hands-on opportunity to experience the frontier of interactive media and computer graphics. This CD-ROM captures 7 of the 21 juried installations that were on display at the conference. The contents of this CD span a wide range of techniques and applications that represent the forefront of interaction - exploring areas such as haptics, ubiquitous computing, and interactive music and graphics. While not all of the installations use graphics systems, they all imply applications that could be used to augment graphical environments. This CD provides a sampling of what they experienced in the form of video. Barring "Hyperscore," where we provide the same software and user interface that attendees experienced at the show, this is the best presentation method we can achieve until future technical advances create other media that can better communicate the sense of the experience.
