  • Abstract
    Theories for electron capture from inner shells by fully stripped ions are compared with experiments for K-shell vacancy production, The recently developed theory goes beyond the Oppenheimer-Brinkman-Kramers (OBK) approximation since it accounts for the perturbed stationary-state (PSS) and relativistic (R) effects in the description of inner shells as well as for the Coulomb (C)-deflection of the projectile ions; at high velocities of these ions, the theory merges with the second Born approximation. Agreement with a vast amount of data is obtained without introduction of semiempirical scaling factors. The scheme of calculations, which are cast in terms of the OBK cross sections of Nikolaev3 only for convenience, is presented through a sample evaluation of electron capture cross sections.
