Abstract
The transient discharge behavior of a large superconducting coil in a vacuum vessel which is part of the TOSKA test facility is studied. Several rates of change in the magnetic field are simulated by assuming the current of the coil to decay exponentially with different time constants. The eddy-current field in the metallic parts is computed by means of various vector-potential formulations. The merits and disadvantages of the different methods are discussed. The implications of the resultant forces and losses for the design of this fusion experiment are identified
