Abstract
X-ray diffraction has been used to study the magnetostrictive distortion in single-crystal Terfenol-D. The magnetostriction coefficient and the linear thermal-expansion coefficient have been determined over the temperature range of ±100°C from observing the change in shape, diffraction angle, and intensity of the (440) and (220) X-ray diffraction profiles. From these investigations, the spin reorientation temperature has been measured, and a model for the origin of the lattice distortion has been proposed. The effect of an applied magnetic field on the lattice distortion and in turn on the diffraction patterns has also been investigated. The rotation of the specimen about an axis normal to the (440) plane has been found to cause significant changes in the shape of the diffracted pattern
