Abstract
A unique direct-translation reading aid for the blind has been realized with two custom MOS integrated circuits. One of these circuits is a self-scanned image-sensing array which utilizes unusual signal-processing and scanning circuitry to permit low light level operation. The other custom integrated circuit is a self-scanned output driver chip which controls the high-voltage tactile stimulators of the reading aid directly. The reading aid operates on a direct-translation principle. That is, the tactile information presented to the blind reader is an exact reproduction of the black-and-white information on the page of an ordinary book or newspaper. Using this system, blind subjects have achieved reading rates in excess of 80 words per minute, indicating that the system may become widely used by the blind.
