  • Abstract
    An introduction to the concept of a quantitative measure of television picture quality is presented. The foundation of the impairment unit, which is a quantitative, statistically derived measure of picture quality, is explored as well as the important property of impairment unit summability. Finally, the utility in system design of these quantitative measures of picture quality is discussed and demonstrated by an example.
