Abstract
A condition sufficient for counter-clockwise motion with increasing frequency of the impedance or reflection coefficient on a Smith chart is derived. The condition is examined for several simplifying cases. Counter-clockwise behaviour of a few illustrative circuits is treated. One particular circuit application using counter-clockwise motion is covered in detail, the y.i.g.-tuned oscillator-drain-matching network. The solution to this microwave-oscillator problem represents a completely new approach in determining matching networks.
