Abstract
The Universe project used a satellite network to explore the applicability of high-speed wide-area networks. Although future high-speed networks, especially in the UK, are likely to be land based, many of the lessons of that project will be relevant to future service networks. The paper critically examines the protocol structure used in the project and attempts to provide insights relevant to future high-performance networks.
