Abstract
The results of experiments on stress-dependent saturation magnetostriction in metallic glasses are reviewed. These results are then discussed in terms of the existing phenomenological models, and it is concluded that the most probable mechanisms that govern the phenomenon are stress-induced structural anisotropy and the resulting magnetic anisotropy via the pseudodipolar interactions of the preferentially ordered atomic pairs. Saturation magnetostriction decreases with the tensile stress at a rate on the order of 10-10 MPa-1, and therefore the effect is only detectable in low-magnetostrictive metallic glasses
