Abstract
The general operation of state reassignment is analysed using a method of Boolean matrix algebra. It is shown that state reassignment can be implemented by pre- and postmultiplication of a given (assigned) machine by a single operator. The physical interpretation of this operation is considered. Possible applications of this structure to the evaluation of optimal assignments are proposed.
