Abstract
A novel measurement technique for observing rare spectral events in semiconductor lasers under high speed modulation is described. The technique uses a narrowband optical filter in conjunction with a BER error detector to obtain measurements of wavelength statistics as a function of time. This method has been used to measure mode partitioning in DFB lasers.
