Abstract
The way MIMO antennas work is explained in a simple and intuitive manner, starting from the Woodward-Lawson synthesis method for classic antennas. The approach clarifies the strong similarities between MIMO and classic antennas, showing that the differences between them are mainly due to a different way in which the available degrees of freedom of the electromagnetic field are used.
