Studying the Effective Parameters on Welding of Polyethylene Joints

In this work the effects of important parameters that govern the electro-fusion process is analyzed. It has already been shown in the literature that these important parameters are prioritized as the jointʹs temperature, pressure and the uniformity of the applied force, respectively. In this study the effect of the temperature and the time of application is predicted by a numerical package and verified with experimental data. A channel is machined on the outside of one and the inside of the other coupling pipes. A coupling sheet made of the same material as the pipes with an inlaycd electrical heating element is laid in the channel. Applying electrical power to the healing element raises the temperature at the coupling point and forms a fusion bond between the coupler and the pipes, resulting in a leak free joint with no interior How obstructions or exterior collars or protrusions. To find the optimum condition of power application, the process first is simulated with two flat plates and the obtained condition is scaled to the pipe coupling process.
