The application of data envelopment analysis approach to estimating the efficiency of sugar beet producers in Khorasan province

Sugar Beet is an important source of energy for human. With regards to water and land cultivated constraint limitations for sugar beet, improving management on production of this product is necessary. In this paper, technical, allocative and cost efficiency of 195 sugar beet producers in 2003 was calculated using nonparametric data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach. Results showed that on average technical, allocative and cost efficiency is estimated to be 51.93, 18.21 and 8.84 percent, respectively. Also, sugar beet yield can be potentially increased by 36 to 46 ton per hectare. Producers were recognized to have technical efficiency less than 61 percent and allocative efficiency less than 21 percent. Optimal extension package with high effecting power and distribution of breeding seeds for increasing efficiency are suggested.
