The use of linguistic and literary issues in the interpretation of the Qurʹan

In this article, the writer makes an attempt to explain the use of linguistic and literary questions such as vocabulary, syntax, poetry and rhetoric in interpreting the Qurʹan. The revelation of the Qurʹan in clear Arabic was followed by the efforts of literary men and interpreters to express its subtle points; the increasing reference to lexical, syntactic and rhetorical questions in the interpretation of the Qurʹan provides proof to this claim. There are few theological, philosophical, mystic and jurisprudential interpretations of the Qurʹan which have not made extensive use of linguistic and literary questions. Great men of letters such as Abdolghaher Georgani, Ragheb Isfahani, Zamakhshari, Sakkaki and Zarkeshi have emphasized the fact that a knowledge of literary and rhetorical issues is a must for every interpretor and that it would not be possible to interpret the Qurʹan without paying attention to these fundamentals.
