Sex Determination in Some Ladybirds (Col.: Coccinellidae)Fauna of Moghan Region

In collection programs conducted during 1999-2001 in Moghan region, northwest of Iran, 17 species of ladybirds (Col.: Coccinellidae) were collected and identified.Of the species, 9 were new record for the region. Sex determination of 12 species were done based on Randall et al. (1992) method, by using their abdominal sternites figures. The shape of the hind margin of fifth or sixth abdominal segments and the relative size of flexure bands in the sexes were particularly important and useful diagnostic sexual feature. Three flexure bands between the abdominal sternites were useful secondary sex determining feature in many species. The sex-determining characteristics described were shown in the accompanying figures. This method were used for the first time on Stetharus gilvifrons (Mulsant), Clitostethus arcuatus (Rossi), Scymnus subvillosus Goeze, Scymnus rubromaculatus (Goeze), Exochomus flavipes (Thunberg) and Bulaea lichatschovi (Humm.).
