A Review of Intensity and Spread of Droughts in West Part of Iran

Annual rainfall is selected and used for analysis of droughts for 25 synoptic and climatogical stations of western part of Iran for period of 1966-1999. This study using annual rainfall index, shows that within 34 years, Iran has faced 17 dry years and 16 wet years. According to the classification of droughts, 12 were moderate and 4 average. Based on the classification of Subramaniam, the lowest land coverage occurred in 1994 with 8% and the highest coverage was in 1995 with 100%. Years 1970, 1973, 1985, 199 with land coverage of over 90% were the most important cases. In in recent years, total rainfall has decreased and droughts increased. The result of study show that the level ofprecipitation decrease was insignificant.
