Human information behavior and the design, development and evaluation of information retrieval systems

Information behavior is one of the most important research areas in Information Science and can play an influential role in the design, development and evaluation of information retrieval systems. Although there seems a gap between these two areas of research in the classical literature of Information Science, a close relationship is found as a consequence of recent interactions among Information Science and related fields. This paper describes "human information behavior" and sets out to review the existing literature to find out whether or not there is a kind of relationship among research findings of information behavior and the main approaches in the design, development and evaluation of information retrieval systems. Some new methods in which such a relationship is taken considerably into account and implications of human-centered approach in evaluation of information retrieval systems are also explored
