Review on the Applications of Nanotechnology in Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Industries

Nanotechnology with its multidisciplinary nature has broken the science boundaries and prepared the basis to improve the life quality by using the outcomes and tools of all different branches of science. Oil and gas industries have long history in Iran and using these vast resources, have a special place in the COt1I1try. Attempt to have new technologies and improve the current situation in these industries is of special attention. Therefore, they are also influenced more or less by nanotechnology to change their situations. Using nanotechnology in seismic, strengthening drilling mud, producing nano composites and improving their thermal and stress resistance in drilling, improving cement performance during the drill ing, catalysts for improving their thermal and chemical resistance and their selecti vity,sulfur recovery from gasoline and improving octane number of gasoline and using carbon nano tubes as a means for gas storage are the applications of nanotechnology in the upstream and downstream oil industry. This article presents a review on the ongoing research and development activities in oil, gas and petrochemical industries and possible works on these fields that maybe done by nanotechnology.
