«The Concept and Function of Ignorance» «in Holy Quran and Historical Texts»

Ignorance is deemed as one of the significant issues in the history of Islam. The term ʹIgnorance* has its origin in the holy Quran, and historians and commentators have stated various connotations and functions for it. A comprehensive survey of the holy Quran, Nahjul-Balaqa, and historical texts shows that the term Tgnoranceʹ does not merely mean lack of knowledge; it rather connotes a sensual state which neglects the Divine guidance and negates Godʹs Omnipotence over life affairs. As a result, the term ʹIgnoranceʹ connotes insanity, violence, abnormality, lack of will, haste, lack of self-control as well as lack of knowledge. Thus, ignorance is a concept, which knows no time and location.
