The study of validity and reliability of Standard Figural Stimuli Scale on Iranian Students

ntroduction: Standard Figural Stimuli Scale introduced by Stunkard (1983) is one of the frequently used body image scales. In order to examine its validity and reliability, the scale was translated into Persian as suggested by Brislin, Lonnner and Thorndike (1973) cross-cultural research methods. Methods and Materials: 120 students of Shiraz University were asked to complete the Standard Figural Stimuli Scale. Principal factor analysis method was employed to examine the factor structure of the scale. Results: The following subscales were extracted: 1) ideal body image, 2) current body image, 3) ideal husband (wife) mental image, and 4) flexibility of body image. A significant correlation was obtained (r =-/188, P<0/001) between different ideal and current body image factors and body esteem. Test-retest reliability was 0.79 after 3 weeks and internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) was 0.75. Conclusion: Theresults showed that the Standard Figural Stimuli Scale hasconstruct and concurrent validity and test–retest reliability (after 3 weeks); therefore; this scale is a valid instrument to be used for Iranian population.
