Preliminary Evaluation of Seismic Behavior of Masonry Buildings with Shell Roofs

(domes, vaults and complex forms) in arid, and semi arid areas in Iran. Masonry buildings consist of sun dried bricks (KheshL), fired brick walls and dome and barrel vault roofs. Almost all buildings ofthjs type have collapsed due to the failure of walls. Excessive layers ofmud straw on the roof for heat insulation also increased the weight of many ofthese roofs. In this paper, a classification of these roofs is presented and also an attempt is made to review the seismicbehaviorofshell roofs in the past Iranian earthquakes. A simple masonry building with shell roofwas modeled with finite element and a response spectrum seismic analysis was carried out fortwo different hazard levels; DBE=0.35g and MCE=0.45g, Based on the past experience and studies, iteanbe eoncludcd that in eases where the supporting walls survived, the dome or vault roofs often performed satisfactory.
