The Origin of the Story of Sheykh-e Sanʹan Myth of Remembrance and Amnesia

The origins of the story of Sheikh-e San an have not yet been found. It is a mystical narrative verse from the book of Mantiq-al-teyr composed by the Iranian poet Farid-al-din ʹAttar (12-13 A.D.) It seems that ʹAttar, had taken its theme from the Indian myth of "Matsyendranath and Gorakhnath", that was common in India and Nepal during 10lh and I2lh centuries (4th and 6th A.D.). Therefore, this article is an attempt to find the origins of She.kh-e Sanʹan story by comparing it to the Indian myth of "Matsyendranath and Gorakhnath". This myth narrates the story of a Joki/Yogi (sage) that is enchanted by womenʹs love and falls into a period of amnesia, but finally returns to remembrance by his own disciple and going back to his students starts the mystical teachings of Yogi, anew.
