The Quiddity of Veracity in Islamic Philosophy

The discussion on the true nature of veracity and how the propositions correspond with the reality has been of philosophersʹ concern to the extent that its precedence can be traced back to the ancient Greece. Islamic theologians have generally defined veracity as "the mental proposition (certainty, knowledge, and...) accordant with reality". Islamic philosophers from Avecina on have presented this definition for veracity of propositions in their writings. Before him, however, it can be said that philosophers -though not explicitly - would presuppose "correspondence", as the atmosphere of their writings show. Despite the Muslim philosophersʹ concern for this, it seems that we lack a comprehensive and clear interpretation from Muslim philosophersʹ view. Therefore, in this writing we have tried to present, in addition to investigating prominent Muslim philosophersʹ words_ on this point, a clear interpretation of the theory of "correspondence" from Muslim philosophersʹ viewpoint.
