An Examination of Energy Subsidy in the Economy of Iran and Necessity of Its Reconsideration

A close look at present system of subsidies in Iran makes it clear that it has not been appropriately designed. The main reason being low energy coefficient, high energy intensity and high amount of energy subsidy and its Un equal distribution. An examination of the experience of many successful countries in this regard shows that their rice reform policy has been gradual. They have undertaken different mechanisms while at the sometime they have protected Volunerables against any possible negative effect. To reforms its subsidies, Iran, Parliament have passed a law entitles ʹʹthe law of targetization of subsidy, aiming at efficient allocation of resources. This law would lead to increase in efficiency, optimization of energy consumption, reduction of smuggling and promotion of social Justice by reducing gaps among various income groups. In this paper we shall examine how far these policy objectives can he met.
