Grain Refining Treatment on Aluminum Using Dual Equal Channel Lateral Extrusion

In the present work a new method of severe plastic deformation is introduced. The method is a prototype of the renown ʹequal channel angular extrusion" process and uses the same mode of straining. This process may be called ʹdual equal channel lateral extrusion (DECLE)ʹ. DECLE is implemented to process commercially pure aluminum. The changes of micro-structure and mechanical properties of the material undergone the deformation is investigated. Results have shown a considerable amount of grain refinement and appreciable increase in hardness and flow stress of the samples after a reasonable number of passes. Softening due to excessive deformation is revealed both in hardness and compression test values which can be rationalized by intense recovery and the dynamic recrystallization observed via electron microscopy for the samples endured 9 successive passes.
