One of epistemological developments in recent decades is that religion has gained prominence in clarifying phenomena in international and domestic politics. As new theories such as constructivism, postmodern viewpoints and analytical theories emerged and gained prominence -all of which emphasize the role of cultural elements in forming political behavior- the role of religion has become more important than ever.
The victory of Iranian Islamic Revolution and succeeding events as well as formation of religion-oriented political movements have made the religion an independent variable in the study of international relations. Based on this viewpoint, the current article studies the importance of religion in international relations and how it legalizes measures by states and how it gives identity to political movements.
