Studying the Seismic Vulnerability of Base Isolated Rigid Block Type Equipment Using Fragility Curves

In this paper, the seismic vulnerability of block type equipment, w/o seismic isolation, due to a rocking mode of motion, is studied under earthquake inducts using fragility curves. The blocks of equipment are assumed rigid and the friction coefficients between equipment and their supports are large enough to prevent sliding. Such non-structural seismically isolated components are studied stochastically for their seismic vulnerabilities. For this purpose, numerical analyses were carried out for the equipment under a suite of earthquake records as input seismic excitation. The applied records are scaled in the ranges of 0.1-1.5g (PGA) and the block response in each scale is calculated under each record. Finally, the seismic fragility curves are generated for equipment blocks with different aspect ratio according to the calculated responses. The diagrams are generated for fixed base equipment as well as equipment with floor isolation systems. Keywords: Seismic Vulnerability, Rigid Block Rotation, Seismic Fragility
