Internet, Social Movements, and Mobilization of Protests

In 1990s, ICTs have been led to increase the power of new social movements in shaping and directing of global public opinion, protests and genesis of serious challenges for governments. Social movements are one of the very important actors in global civil society. In this article, first the author studies theoretically the important functions of internet for social movements, then, four social movements will be studied that consist of: Zapatista, protests against WTO, group 8 and antiwar groups. The results show that internet after second half of 1990s has had more impact on the success of social movements by its possibilities such as: Emails, websites, vast informing, network making and identification.
