NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF)

The National Science Foundation is an independent organization of the United Statesʹ executive branch. It was established in 1950 with the aim of supporting teaching and research in science and engineering. The National Science Foundation supports many national and international programs in teaching and research in science and engineering, and exchange of information related to theses areas. In addition to providing direct support for teaching and research, the Foundation has the advisory responsibility to the U.S. president and congress in science and engineering. Furthermore, by long-range studies, the NSF has been able to play a vital role in U.S. science and engineering development and progress. The purpose of this article is to review the nature and structure of the National Science Foundation. In this study, the formation, mission activities, organizational structure including National Science Board, Office of Director, Directorates, various offices, budget, process of approving proposals and its status in this century are examined.
