The Political-Structural Factors Contributing to the Inefficiency of the Safawiden Army and its Effects on Economy and the Society

From the beginning of the Shah Tahmasp reign up to the reformation of the military-political structure by Shah Abbas the First (1502-1722), the Ghezelbash Army did not emerge as a strong and efficient force in performing its main functions, namely countering and repelling the military-security threats posed on the existence of the country and the government In searching the factors of such inefficiency, the effects of political-structural factors on this inefficiency showed themselves, after which it followed that the most important factor of such weakness originated from the inharmonious structure of the Army and the servicemenʹs political occupations, which marked itself in the form of military and political conflicts and tensions among the tribal components of the Ghezelbash Army, unjustified inferences in political affairs which were outside their accepted framework, and also the role the servicemen played in political domains as well as suppressing social and political movements. At this time juncture, these conditions caused the political system to face serious challenges at times, where it hardly survived collapse. This research focuses on the dimensions and correlates of the Armyʹs inefficiency and the political-structural factors that contributed to it as well as the results of the consequences of this effect
