Potentials of CO2 Reduction in Steam Systems

Because of broad use of steam in petrochemical industries, there are considerable potentials for saving energy and decreasing C02 emission. Decreasing boiler blow down, using economizer for preheating boiler feed water, using high efficiency and low NOx burners, recovering heat from boiler blow down, using steam trap management system for steam trap routine check and maintenance, collecting and using steam condensate for boiler feed water, insulating steam and condensate pipes, cleaning heat transfer surface of furnace, using economizer for preheating air combustion inlet, replacing heavy fuel oil with fuel gas, adjusting and controlling air fuel ratio and excess air, and checking insulation and refractory of furnaces and boilers are some of the ways that can help save energy in boilers and steam systems. This article elaborates on some of these mechanisms and experiences gained at Bandar Imam Petrochemical Complex.
