Cultural Settings of Demographic Changes: Considerations on Iranʹs Fertility Transition

Through using a theoretical framework and empirical evidence, this paper highlights the key role of cultural settings to explain demographic change and fertility transition. The arguments support the key point that the decline of population growth and the fall of birth rates depend mainly on considering cultural settings. Iran has experienced substantial demographic changes over the past decades, resulting in one of the most spectacular experiences of birth fall in the world. The analyses of this paper clearly demonstrate the fact that such a demographic change is closely associated with fundamental socio-cultural changes which have occurred in the country during the past decades.
