Explanation as Unification

رايج‏ترين نظريه‏اي كه آغازگر بحث تبيين در قرن بيستم است، نظريه قانون فراگير تبيين، شامل دو الگوي قياسي ـ قانوني و استقرايي ـ آماري است. كارل همپل بيان دقيقي از ايده تبيين علمي را، كه توسط هيوم و ميل صورت‌بندي مبهمي داشت، به تصوير مي‏كشد. نقدهاي جدي كه در نيمه دوم قرن بيستم در خصوص اين نظريه مطرح شد راه را براي نظريه‏هاي ديگر گشود. الگوي وحدت‏بخشي تبيين كه طرح اوليه آن از سوي مايكل فريدمن مطرح شد و به دست فيليپ كيچر بسط يافت، از مهم‏ترين اين الگوهاست. بنا بر رويكرد كيچر، علم فهم ما نسبت به جهان را به كمك وحدت‏ بخشيدن پديده‏هاي گوناگون افزايش مي‏دهد. وحدت‏بخشي در چهارچوب معرفت علمي، با به حداقل رساندن شمار الگوهاي استنتاج و به حداكثر رساندن شمار نتايج توليدشده به‏دست مي‏آيد. در اين جستار با شرح و بازسازي الگوي وحدت‏بخشي تبيين، نشان خواهيم داد اين الگو برخي از مشكلات سنتي مدل قانون فراگير را حل مي‏كند.

The most common theory which is the initiator of the topic of explanation in 20th century is the covering law model theory that includes two sorts of models: Deductive- Nomological model and Inductive-Statistical model. Carl Hempel provided an exact expression of scientific explanation, that which had some ambiguity in the Hume and Mill’s formulation. The serious criticisms on the theory in the second half of the 20th century have opened a way for other theories. The Unification model of explanation, first introduced by Michael Friedman and developed by Philip Kitcher, is the most important of these models. The Kitcher’s approach says through unifying different phenomenon, science increases our understanding about the world. The unifying framework of scientific knowledge would be achieved by minimizing number of patterns and maximizing the number of generated conclusions. In this essay, we describe and reformulate explanation as unification and we argue that this model solve some of the traditional problems of covering law model.
